Entrevista a Paul Bright, director de la cantera de FC United
FC United of Manchester España ha tenido el placer de poder entrevistar a una de las personas más influyentes del club, es Paul Bright (@BrightyFCUM) y él es Jefe de Cantera.
No cabe duda del éxito que está teniendo la Academia de FCUM debido al gran trabajo que se está realizando para formar jugadores que puedan llegar al primer equipo pero también para formar en valores a dichas personas.
Por dichos motivos, FC United, a través de Lee Fletcher, ha entrevistado a este hombre con el fin de que se conozcan alugnas ideas sobre cuestiones interesantes.
¿Qué expectativas tiene el club en un futuro cercano?
Las expectativas de futuro para el club es continuar siendo un club de fútbol sostenible teniendo en cuenta a los copropietarios, que son lo más importante. Claramente, en cuanto al desarrollo de la cantera del club, tenemos expectativas y ambiciones para formar jugadores en todos los equipos del club (filial, juvenil, femenino, senior...) para que vayan progresando como por ejemplo Charlie Raglan, Tom Davies, Oliver Banks o Rhys Coogan. Nuestro objetivo es formar jugadores con capacidad técnica y táctica y, además, con valores ético y morales. Obviamente el club en su conjunto debe ser sostenible, pero también tiene que ser un modelo que represente que el poder del club debe residir en los aficionados.
What are the future expectations of the club and also the Academy?
The future expectations for the club is to continue to be a sustainable football club and being a voice for the fans and co-owners hat has to be the most important thing. Clearly, looking from a coaching and development side of the club, we have expectations and ambitions to develop planners throughout the club from Academy, reserves and first team to the women's team for these players to go begin or go back into the professional game which we shown with Charlie Raglan, Tom Davies and Oliver Banks but also Rhys Coogan from the Academy. So from a football and personal front we want to produce players with the right technical and tactical ability but also as good people. Obviously the club as a whole is about being sustainable but also to be a voice and a stance for the everyday football fan who believes in fan central clubs rather than owners who dictate the future of their respective football clubs.
¿Qué opinión tenéis de los clubes españoles que han adoptado la filosofía de FCUM, es decir, los dueños son los aificionados, como CAP Ciudad de Murcia entre otros?
Cualquier club de accionarado popular es muy positivo para el fútbol. España tiene una cultura futbolística diferente a francesa, alemana o inglesa, sin embargo en clubes como CAP Cuidad de Murcia o Unionistas de Salmanca C.F. el poder lo tienen los aficionados. FC United se inspiró en el modelo de AFC Wimbledon y el gran trabajo que hicieron tras la desaparición del histórico Wimbledon. Algo parecido ocurrió en el club galés Swansea City, cuyos fans tienen parte de la propiedad del club. No solo hay ejemplos en Inglaterra que están pasando por este período de transición sino también en otros paises de Europa, como Italia. En España, FC Barcelona fue de los socios durante muchos años pero ahora está en manos de grandes patrocinadores que hacen que lleven publicidad incluso en la manga.
Lo que se debe hacer es cuidar tu club, y es lo que FC United hace, que es considerado como una familia. En mi carrera profesional, he trabajado en clubs de gran prestigio como Manchester United, entre otros, y nunca he conocido algo como FC United of Manchester. Lo que vemos en el FC United es una interacción que no vemos tan a menudo en el fútbol, incluyendo en la interactividad a seguidores con los jugadores y directores, y también el trabajo de la comunidad que hacemos en el ámbito local es una parte vital.
What is your opinion of Spanish clubs that have adopted the FC United of Manchester model and philosophy, such as CAP Cuidad de Murcia?
For any club to have a fan ownership or fans involved in the decision making of their club is only good for the game of football. Spain is a different football culture compared to France, Germany and England and the Premier League however any club, including the likes of CAP Cuidad de Murcia and Union Salmanca who can put the fans at the heart of the club are ultimately going to be successful. As fans controlled clubs is about ownership, empowerment and inclusion. FC United looked at the model of FC Wimbledon and the fantastic job they did is a such dreadful period of their history but also Swansea City who have part ownership of their club. There are other examples in England that are going through this transitional period of club ownership but also in the around Europe. We see in Spain that FC Barcelona flew the flag for many years of members in clubs, however they have began to follow the money teams and have shirt sponsorships and even sleeve sponsorship.
The facts is that, you look after your own people and family, and that is what FC United is like, a family. IN all my experiences at places like Manchester United and working across the globe in varies clubs, I have never known anything like FC United. What we see at FC United is an interaction that we don't see so often in football including fans interactivity with players and directors but also the community work that we do in the local area is such a vital part that everything about fan-owned football clubs are a positive in football and where these clubs are based.
¿Está prevista una visita de FCUM a España pronto?
Estoy muy esperanzado con una visita a España de FC United. Obviamente, el nuevo estadio en Broadhurst se abrirá pronto y es una gran ocasión. El plan en la pretemporada es usar las instalaciones y eso significa que hay posibilidades de alguna invitación. Por ejemplo, jugaremos contra el gigante europeo Benfica en Manchester para inaugurar el estadio. Hemos viajado con frecuencia a varios países, sin embargo nunca a España, pero es algo que nos gustaría hacer en el futuro. Karl Marginson y yo somos muy aficionados a España y la cultura española y la forma en que el fútbol se juega. Nuestra comida favorita es la española. Nos gustaría también que nuestra Cantera juegue en el futuro contra un equipo español porque creo que técnicamente y tácticamente nos aportará aspectos muy positivos. En el pasado hemos disfrutado de jugadores españoles en nuestras filas y siempre tuvieron esa conciencia táctica y técnica, algo que está en el ADN español.
Estoy planeando un viaje a España, posiblemente Madrid para visitar diferentes estructuras de fuúbol base, en clubes como el Rayo Vallecano y Alcorcon por ejemplo, para ver cómo funcionan sus entrenadores y arender conceptos y aplicarlos a FC United, porque, a la hora de aprender, no hay límite entre diferentes países y culturas del fútbol.
Do you think we'll see a visit to Spain from FCUM soon?
I am very hopeful of a visit to Spain for FC United. Obviously, the new stadium at Broadhurst Park will be open soon and that is a big occasion in the clubs history. The plan in the pre-season is to occupy and use the facilities there which means the possibilities of teams being invited over. For example we have secured a European giant in Benfica to come to Manchester to play a game at the stadium. So the objective will be to invite teams over, however we have travelled frequently in the past to various countries, however never to Spain but it is something we like to do in the future. Myself and Karl Marginson are very fond of Spain and the Spanish culture and the way football is played, and also our favourite food being Spanish food actually. We would also maybe like to bring the Academy over at some point in the future and play against some Spanish opposition because I think technically and tactically playing against different cultures and countries will only benefit the development of FC United players. Also having worked with Spanish players in the past, they have always had that tactical and technical awareness as it seems to be in their DNA.
On the back of all of this, I am planning to come over to Spain, Possibly Madrid to look at different Academy structures, possibly not major La Liga clubs, but clubs such as Rayo Vallecano and Alcorcon for example, to see how their coaches operate and take away those learnings to possible implement into FC United, because there is no limit to what we can learn from others and especially different countries and cultures of football.
En cuanto al futbol base, que es igual de importante la educacion en valores que los conocimientos futbolistiscos?
Creo que los valores educativos y futbolisticos son igualmente importantes. A nivel personalmente, no creo que los conocimientos de educación o de fútbol deben suplantar los valores personales del jugador. Digo esto porque nuestro objetivo es formados jugadores basados en su actitud y comportamiento y queremos hacerlos mejores personas, así como mejores jugadores. Puedes tener grandes conocimientos de fútbol y académicos, sin embargo, si usted no es una buena persona o tiene la actitud incorrecta, mal comportamiento, etc. no creo que tenga éxito en ningún aspecto de la vida, incluyendo el fútbol. Por estos motivos, los valores personales ocupan un lugar destacado porque sólo queremos gente educada y con valores ético en este club.
Obviamente queremos que nuestros jugadores de cualquier categoría del club tengan tiempo para mejorar futbolísticamente. Creo que somos tan buenos técnicamente como cualquier de fútbol base de categoría nacional. La comprensión del juego y toma de decisiones es algo que queremos enseñar en el club de forma prioritaria.
También tenemos en FCUM programas educativos, y son igualmente importantes. Aunque tenemos un grupo muy talentoso tenemos que ser realistas y decir que no todos nuestros jugadores de la Academia llegarán al fútbol profesional, pero los pocos que lleguen deben estar preparados. Los valores, los estudios o la aptitud futbolística son temas que decidirán su futuro.
Regarding the Academy, are values education and football knowledge equally important?
I think the values of the education and football knowledge at the Academy are equally important. On personally level, I don't think that the education or football knowledge should supersede the personal values of the player. I say this because we look to recruit players based on their attitude and behaviour and we want to make them better people as well as better players. You can have great football knowledge and academically very good, however if you are not a very good person or have the right attitude, behaviour, work ethic and humility, I don't think you will be successful in any career including football. So, I actually put personal values at the top of that list because overall we want good people at this club.
We obviously want our players in any categoric of the club to take away from their time here of being better footballers. I think for players, understanding the game is critical in England at the minute as I believe we are just as good as any nation technically. I think the game understanding and decision making is something that we want them to take away from their time at the club.
We also have the educational programs at FC, and they are equally important and could be contested as more important than the football side of things, and rightly so. Even though we have a very talented group of players year on year, we have to be realistic and say that all of these players will not make it to the professional game. So, we have to prepare them for that academically and what the world might throw at them in the future. The values are a critical part of this process as if they do well academically or from a football point, their personal values will be the thing that decides their future.
Broadhurst Park será el lugar de encuentro para todos los red rebels y por supuesto es una realidad, ¿qué le dirías a la gente que no creyó en vosotros cuando fundasteis el club?
Creo que la gente nos tomaba por locos cuando presentamos el proyecto pero... lo hemos hecho! Andy Walsh en la reunión de la Junta y nos propuso a mi y a Karl Marginson. AFC Wimbeldon hizo algo parecido aunque fue una "re-fundación". Este proyecto es meramente de los aficionados y accionistas, y constantemente estamos viendo cómo mejoran las cosas. ¿Hemos comeito errores en el camino? Sí. ¿Aprendemos de los errores? Por supuesto. Ciertamente es un momento emocionante en el club y cada vez más clubes están copiando nuestro modelo. Nosotros estamos abiertos a compartir nuestros conocimientos con otros clubes sobre el modelo de FC United y ofrecer ayuda a cualquier persona que quiera hablar de esta filosofía.
En FC United of Manchester todo el mundo trabaja en la misma dirección y el club es una auténtica familia. El nuevo estadio que estamos construyendo en el parque de Broadhurst estará abierto a todos los que deseen visitar y observar nuestro modelo. Creo que mucha gente está sorprendida de cómo está creciendo FCUM y el proyecto está abierto a todas las personas. Broadhurst Park will be the meeting point for all red rebels, what would you say to the people who didn't believe that this model of club could be created?
I don't think I would say anything to the people that doubted this model other than, we have done it! Andy Walsh discussed this at the board meeting and was echoed by myself and Karl Marginson, this has never been done before. AFC Wimbeldon did this, however had a contingency from the previous regime. However, we have done this from scratch. This purely down to the fans, members and co owners, and we are constantly looking at how to improve things as this is an unfamiliar situation. Have we made errors along the way? Yes. Do we learn from those errors? Of course, but ultimately we will get it right. It is certainly an exciting time in the club and even in football as more and more clubs are looking at this model of owning a football club. We are looking to share our knowledge with other clubs about the model of FC United and we are open and approachable for anybody who wants to discuss this way of fan ownership.
From how I feel, and know, about FC United is that everyone is pulling on the same direction and looking to be successful at whatever we do, whether it be in the community or on the field and also to be sustainable for a longer lasting future. The facility that we are building at Broadhurst Park goes a long way to building that future and success, and it will be open to all who wish to visit and look at our model of development as a club and members. I think a lot of people will be surprised at the way we run FC United and the way it is open to all people. The supports have a big part to play in this model and support the team whatever the result, and we hope the model and this kind of support can influence other clubs to look at the model of membership.
¿Cuáles serian tus consejos para la gente que funde un club con vuestra filsofia?
A pesar de nuestra experiencia, no me gustaría dar obligaciones aunque si consejos. No hay dos clubes iguales y por lo tanto a la hora de organizarse hay diferencias. Nuestra diferencia más destacada es que somos de la gente del club y tenemos que escuchar sus necesidades. Eso significa hacer lo que ellos quieren. Prefiero un equipo guiado por la gente. Puedes aprender cosas de cada club y aplicarlo a tu club. Aunque nuestro objetivo es tener un club en propiedad de fans y que tenemos que hacer lo que es correcto para los aficionados, los miembros y el club en su conjunto. No todos estarán de acuerdo pero será decidido de forma democrática, que es cómo creemos que debería ser.
Así que en última instancia, yo diría que no adopte la misma filosofía, pero que se escoja lo que se quiere y se necesita. La verdad es que las personas involucradas determinarán la forma en la que gestionar tu club. Nos gustaría continuar creando conexiones con clubes en España y apoyando a cualquier club que tiene las mismas ideas que nosotros, con los aficionados en mente. La puerta siempre está abierta para ayudar a otros clubes.
What would you advice to the people that want to create a club with the same philosophy?
I would not advice anybody to adopt the same philosophy. The reality is not two clubs have the same philosophy of how a club is managed. The difference with us is that we are for the people of the club and we need to listen to their needs. That means listening to what they want. So adopting the same philosophy would not be the correct term, but rather a people led philosophy that is for the people. You can learn a from every club and implement it to your own ideas of how a club is managed. Nonetheless our focus is to have a fan central owned club and that we have to do what is right for the supports, members and the club as a whole. Not everyone may agree on this but will be decided in a democratic way, which is how we believe it should be.
So ultimately, I would say don't adopt the same philosophy, but take what you want and need and adjust the philosophy to how you want it to be. The truth is that the people involved will dictate the way the you manage your club. We would like to continue to create connections with clubs in Spain, and continue to support any club that has the same ideas as us, with the supports in mind. The door is always open to help other clubs.

Creo que mucha gente está sorprendida de cómo está creciendo FCUM y el proyecto está abierto a todas las personas. Los fans tienen una parte importante en este modelo, apoyan al equipo, sea cual sea el resultado. Uno de nuestros deseos es que surjan más clubes de accionariado popular.
Broadhurst Park will be the meeting point for all red rebels, what would you say to the people who didn't believe that this model of club could be created?
I don't think I would say anything to the people that doubted this model other than, we have done it! Andy Walsh discussed this at the board meeting and was echoed by myself and Karl Marginson, this has never been done before. AFC Wimbeldon did this, however had a contingency from the previous regime. However, we have done this from scratch. This purely down to the fans, members and co owners, and we are constantly looking at how to improve things as this is an unfamiliar situation. Have we made errors along the way? Yes. Do we learn from those errors? Of course, but ultimately we will get it right. It is certainly an exciting time in the club and even in football as more and more clubs are looking at this model of owning a football club. We are looking to share our knowledge with other clubs about the model of FC United and we are open and approachable for anybody who wants to discuss this way of fan ownership.
From how I feel, and know, about FC United is that everyone is pulling on the same direction and looking to be successful at whatever we do, whether it be in the community or on the field and also to be sustainable for a longer lasting future. The facility that we are building at Broadhurst Park goes a long way to building that future and success, and it will be open to all who wish to visit and look at our model of development as a club and members. I think a lot of people will be surprised at the way we run FC United and the way it is open to all people. The supports have a big part to play in this model and support the team whatever the result, and we hope the model and this kind of support can influence other clubs to look at the model of membership.
¿Cuáles serian tus consejos para la gente que funde un club con vuestra filsofia?
A pesar de nuestra experiencia, no me gustaría dar obligaciones aunque si consejos. No hay dos clubes iguales y por lo tanto a la hora de organizarse hay diferencias. Nuestra diferencia más destacada es que somos de la gente del club y tenemos que escuchar sus necesidades. Eso significa hacer lo que ellos quieren. Prefiero un equipo guiado por la gente. Puedes aprender cosas de cada club y aplicarlo a tu club. Aunque nuestro objetivo es tener un club en propiedad de fans y que tenemos que hacer lo que es correcto para los aficionados, los miembros y el club en su conjunto. No todos estarán de acuerdo pero será decidido de forma democrática, que es cómo creemos que debería ser.
Así que en última instancia, yo diría que no adopte la misma filosofía, pero que se escoja lo que se quiere y se necesita. La verdad es que las personas involucradas determinarán la forma en la que gestionar tu club. Nos gustaría continuar creando conexiones con clubes en España y apoyando a cualquier club que tiene las mismas ideas que nosotros, con los aficionados en mente. La puerta siempre está abierta para ayudar a otros clubes.
What would you advice to the people that want to create a club with the same philosophy?
I would not advice anybody to adopt the same philosophy. The reality is not two clubs have the same philosophy of how a club is managed. The difference with us is that we are for the people of the club and we need to listen to their needs. That means listening to what they want. So adopting the same philosophy would not be the correct term, but rather a people led philosophy that is for the people. You can learn a from every club and implement it to your own ideas of how a club is managed. Nonetheless our focus is to have a fan central owned club and that we have to do what is right for the supports, members and the club as a whole. Not everyone may agree on this but will be decided in a democratic way, which is how we believe it should be.
So ultimately, I would say don't adopt the same philosophy, but take what you want and need and adjust the philosophy to how you want it to be. The truth is that the people involved will dictate the way the you manage your club. We would like to continue to create connections with clubs in Spain, and continue to support any club that has the same ideas as us, with the supports in mind. The door is always open to help other clubs.
